New Tag: Menopause

I have a post from August 2025 called Estrogen needed for immune function. That was not long after this site started and it links to a Reddit post asking why someone's post menopausal mom keeps getting UTIs (urinary tract infections). 

It's extremely brief and at that time I was merely citing it to say "Sex hormones are needed for immune function" which is why that's the title. But I read something in recent weeks that I thought I made a note of and can't find. I found that instead.

So rather than reinvent the wheel, I just added a tag of Menopause for pieces talking about menopause and post-menopausal women and stuff in that general vein.

What I had read recently is that you see more and worse UTIs in post-menopausal women -- to the point that some women DIE of sepsis because of it -- and they've known for a long time prescribing estrogen can reduce that. I didn't read the ENTIRE article. It went in depth about past studies and warning labels etc. convincing doctors and others that prescribing estrogen for post menopausal women was dangerous as it promoted cancer.

The article was suggesting such concerns were overblown and we should be prescribing estrogen for post-menopausal women because the UTI situation is very serious.

I am NOT a doctor and not currently intentionally fostering hormone production for myself -- though I do at times eat pepperoni and pineapple pizza, which should produce progesterone which is a precursor to estrogen -- but if you are menopausal or post-menopausal and having health issues, you may wish to read up on the relationship between your issues and your hormone status and consider speaking to a health care provider or DIYing it. 

Yesterday, I did a post about Testosterone Therapy in Post-Menopausal Women and that had me adding information to the Outline today and looking for this information about UTIs in post-menopausal women. 

I am NOT a physician and this site didn't start out with ANY goal of treating or helping post-menopausal women. If you want to use the information here for that purpose, please do your due diligence because what I've written is not adequate to that situation by any stretch of the imagination, but that doesn't mean it's completely useless.
