Moral Position
I have a deadly genetic disorder -- a form of cystic fibrosis -- and I spent some years on various forums for people with the condition and/or caregivers for such people.
In those communities, it was common for people to talk about their frustrations with the medical system and one of those frustrations was the drug approval process which erred on the side of "First, do no harm" as if the medical system had no idea people were dying at young ages from these kinds of conditions.
Some people felt that "If it's going to give me a horrible side effect five years down the road, GIVE me those five years that I might not have now!!!"
One side effect of being trans is risk of suicide. It is irresponsible to err on the side of imagining you are "first doing no harm" under circumstances where doing nothing may lead to death.
I believe strongly in bodily autonomy and in right to do as you choose with your own body. If doctors hadn't treated me like a hypochondriac making unreasonable demands for antibiotics like I just enjoy having diarrhea as a side effect, I would have suffered a great deal less and may not have ended up spending a year at death's door.
If people have reasonable means to DIY it and wish to do so and will kill themselves without access to care, then making this available is the only morally justifiable position.
No one is going to force them to DIY it against their will. Providing useful information is the safest, sanest option for people in situations where they lack legal access to appropriate care.
And if eating certain things together can cause the body to defacto take on hormones, denying people that knowledge is potentially dangerous for a lot of people even without being trans.
I have never understood why people are so freaked out by my interest in understanding how diet impacts my health. Life is chemistry and we will eat one way or another. Eating in ignorance while trying to cope with a serious medical condition can make life unnecessarily torturous and lead to death.
So please kindly fuck off if you have an issue with me exploring these ideas.
